To this end, a group of industrialists led by Dr. Ercan Varlıbaş supported the idea of the Biotechnology Valley Project. Industrialists who believed in Turkey and in themselves came together under the roof of the Biotechnology Industrialists Association (BİYOSAD). Plans, projects, hundreds of meetings and intensive work yielded results. Today, the Biotechnology Specialized Organized Industrial Zone (BİOSB) Project is supporting Turkey’s goal of development and taking the next step.
Covering 2.7 million square meters, this project includes critical components such as technology development zones, R&D centers, advanced laboratories, patent offices and training centers. This strategic zone, created to contribute to Turkey’s economic development, will serve as a bridge between domestic and foreign markets.
BİOSB was established and started its operations on 28 December 2022 with the approval of the Ministry of Industry and Technology within the framework of legal regulations under the Organized Industrial Zones Law No. 4562.
Site Selection and Environmental Adaptation
The site selection was decided upon after meetings with broad participation and joint evaluations by relevant public institutions. At the end of the process, the Tepeören region was identified as the most suitable area for settlement. In addition, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) stages conducted by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change have all been concluded positively, confirming the project area’s compliance with environmental sustainability principles.
Sectoral Focus and Production Areas
BIOSB creates a broad ecosystem for various biotechnological sectors. It provides the necessary infrastructure, innovation and production equipment to operate in areas such as health and medical biotechnology, food, agriculture, animal husbandry, environmental biotechnology, materials and industrial biotechnology. Production activities will be carried out in various fields such as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, medical devices, agricultural biotechnological products and nanotechnological solutions.
Employment and Human Resources Development
A total of 20,000 qualified personnel are planned to be employed in the BIIZ. The workforce will consist of 2,000 postgraduate and 8,000 undergraduate white-collar specialists and 10,000 blue-collar employees. This distribution aims to create and train the qualified workforce required for high-tech production.
Vision and Mission
BİOSB carries the vision of making Turkey an international biotechnology center by creating an innovative and collaborative ecosystem. In this context, it pioneers scientific and technological units by bringing together start-ups, R&D centers, technology transfer offices and global biotechnology players. Our main mission is to contribute to local production capacity and increase the exportability of biotechnological products.
With these development steps, we aim to pave the way for scientific innovations, sustainable economic developments and business opportunities, and to elevate Turkey to a leading position in the field of biotechnology.
